A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE BEST WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE BEECH ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY AS THIS GROUP OBSERVES ON MAY 24, 1997, THE ELEVENTH ANNUAL BEECH ISLAND HERITAGE DAY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that the members of the Beech Island Historical Society will be observing on May 24, 1997, the eleventh annual Beech Island Heritage Day; and

Whereas, for this observance, the society has dedicated the day to Johannes Tobler and the families who accompanied him from the Swiss Canton Appenzell who settled New Windsor Township and Parish in 1737; and

Whereas, in that migration, forty of the original brave pioneers died in the first summer, but their descendants and heritage nonetheless survived and flourished in the New World; and

Whereas, these families left their homes in Switzerland after civil unrest that led them to an "unknown destination" which in fact was New Windsor, now Beech Island; and

Whereas, this saga, writ large, represents some of the earliest settlement of our State beyond the coast, and is an exemplar of the hardy pioneer stock that found their way to the New World; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they may pay tribute to this hardy group of pioneer South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That, by this resolution, the members of the General Assembly express their best wishes to the members of the Beech Island Historical Society as this group observes on May 24, 1997, the eleventh annual Beech Island Heritage Day.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Beech Island Historical Society and to Dr. P. Witschi, State Archivist, Swiss Canton Appenzell.
